Two day online conference on 7 and 8 September entitled:

«Aromatic and medicinal plants, the treasure of Epirus »

in the framework of the project
«Social Agribusiness and Farmworkers Cooperatives – AGRIFARM»

The company STRATIS consulting Ltd, as constructor of the project Provision of Development Consultant services of the Agrifarm project in the municipality of Zitsa (INTERREG GREECE – ITALY 2014-2020), organizes two day online conference on 7 and 8 September entitled: Aromatic and medicinal plants, the treasure of Epirus. The conference will be held through online platform.

The aim of the conference as well as the project is to inform the participants on issues related to the creation of new farmworker cooperatives as well as the cooperation with consumer networks, the provision of know-how for cultivation, processing, standardization and packaging of aromatic and medicinal plants and the creation of new business ideas and innovative promotional and marketing plans for the aromatic and medicinal plants market.

The first day of the conference Tuesday September 7, 2021, which will last from 15:00 to 21:00, will begin with the registration of participants on the online platform through which the conference will take place and will be followed by short greetings from both the representatives of the Municipality of Zitsa and the project partners. Then will follow the presentations of specialized speakers on Aromatic & Medicinal Plants. Mr. Geitonas Apostolos (STRATIS CONSULTING LTD – Head of the Epirus Epirus branch) will present the actions that are going to be done on behalf of Municipality of Zitsa.

The next speaker Mr. Tzimikas Stergios (Doctor and Owner of the company DIOSKOURIDIS GP) will discuss the biofunctional products from the flora of our country. Mrs. Grigoriadou Aikaterini (Associate Researcher at the Institute of Genetics Improvement and Plant Genetic Resources of ELGO – Dimitra) will follow, who will talk about the creation of a cluster of natural products and the next speaker, Mr. Ragkos Athanasios (Agronomist – Agroeconomist MSc., Ph.D., Associate Researcher of the Institute of Agricultural Economy and Sociology ELGO – DIMITRA) will present his speech on: Investing in Aromatic and medicinal Plants.

The first day of the conference will conclude with Mr. Andreas Economou (Associate Professor at the Primary Education Department of ASPETE – Vice-President of the People’s University of Solidarity Social Economy) who will present the topic entitled: Social and Solidarity Economy in the Agricultural Sector. Correct practices from their implementation.

The next day of the conference, Wednesday, September 8, 2021, which will last from 10:00 to 16:00, will begin with the registration of the participants. The first speaker of the day, Mr. Kapaniaris Alexandros (Member of the Department of Education of the Hellenic Open University, Postdoctoral Researcher of the Department of History & Ethnology of the Democritus University of Thrace, Coordinator of the Educational Work of the Regional Center for Educational Planning (PEKES) of Thessaly, will present his proposal entitled Scientific recordings of herbs from Theophrastus to Flora Graeca.

The next rapporteur, Mrs. Lazari Diamanto (Professor of Pharmacognosy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) will have a presentation on: Greek Aromatic Medicinal Plants and their contribution to health and nutrition. The next speaker Mr. Cassavetes Demosthenes Associate Professor of Law at the Democritus University of Thessaloniki) will talk about the importance and role of Social Economy enterprises within globalization. Then Mrs. Vogiatzi – Kamvoukou Eleni (Professor of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants of the University of Thessaly, President of the Department of Agriculture-Agrotechnology of the University of Thessaly, Director of the Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants) will present her topic entitled: The importance of correct cultivation practice of Aromatic Medicinal Plants for the production of high added value products. The conference will conclude with Mr. Sgouros Dimitrios (Agronomist M.L.A) speech entitled: Aromatic Plants: Start-up of business – Financial tools.

Project summary

The project ‘’Social Agribusiness and Farmworkers Cooperatives – AGRIFARM’’ aims to support, through consulting, education, networking and promotion actions, the creation of new cooperative shemes, which will be active in dynamic agricultural crops (e.g Aromatic and Medicinal Plants) both in Greece and Italy. In particular, the development of Social Rural Entrepreneurship is pursued in accordance with the framework and the conditions in which the Social Economy operates, in order to create new jobs and to create a friendly and favorable environment for the cooperation of employees in the primary sector, thus facilitating the distribution of Agricultural Products, the exchange of know-how and the joint presence in the field of Branding and Labeling.

Within the framework of the project, the following are foreseen:

  • Pilot business plans for the creation of cooperatives in the agricultural sector
  • Innovative promotional and marketing plans
  • Detailed manuals with specifications for cultivation, processing, standardization and packaging regarding to new cultivations of aromatic and medicinal plants
  • Promoting cooperation between producers and consumer networks
  • Information, networking, counseling, promotion and education actions
  • Creation of a Greek-Italian Scientific Centre for cooperation in the agricultural sector. Within the framework of the project, this Centre, will provide daily support, with specialized scientists, to the farmers of the intervention areas.
